This book provides a blueprint of human hand behavior, based on studies of numerous manual tasks. The breadth of this research encompasses more than just grasping objects.

The research results generated three taxonomic classifications to account for essentially all ordinary hand configurations: (1) prehensile postures, (2) non-prehensile postures, and (3) in-hand movements.

The components of these taxonomies were curated from thousands of laboratory observations. Each posture and movement pattern is precisely described and illustrated, with examples of how it occurs in daily life.
